WE ARE WHEELY EXCITED TO BE TAKING PART IN THE SUSTRANS BIG PEDAL THIS WEEK
Sustrans Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge to encourage pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school.
The challenge will run for 10 days from 23 April to 4 May 2018 and on each day, schools compete to see who can get the most pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school. Children will be asked on arrival, how they travelled to school and each class will keep a log which is submitted at the end of the challenge. If over 15% of our school community (that’s 63 St. Stephen’s pupils or parents) cycle or scoot on each day of the challenge, we will also be entered into daily prize draws for rewards including bike stunt shows, equipment and storage.
In 2017, on average 25% of pupils at participating schools took part every day. If those journeys had been made by car, they would have generated 847 tonnes of CO2 and used over 79,000 gallons of fuel, costing over £384,000.
So don’t forget – from 23 April to 4 May – we’d like every pupil, parent and carer to get on their bike, or step on their scooter.
