Building Each Other Up in Love and Learning

MAY 5TH - World Book Day at St. Stephen's

Put the date in your diary - St Stephen's World Book Day is Wednesday 5th May and the theme is classic poetry.

As well as an in-school poetry recital competition, children are also invited to dress-up as a book character. No need to buy a costume - you are encouraged to be creative with cardboard, paints, materials and your own clothes!

World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading - the mission is to promote reading for pleasure. Designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe.

Children will also getting the opportunity in school to get involved in the Spark! Book Awards https://sparkbookaward.co.uk/

This week Year Five met the author Jenny Pearson through a Google meet.

Year Five teacher, Amanda Taylor, gave us her report: "Jenny is one of the authors of the local Spark competition. She told the children about her experience writing 'The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates' and shared some of her inspiration. A funny lady. It really inspired us all to read the book and try some of the other Spark titles, which are all available in our library, thanks to our wonderful FOSS."

In addition, there is also a Virtual Book Fair that will be run to support the activity - it's virtual because this year it is taking place online.

You will have been sent the order form, digital catalogue and guide to purchasing books for your children by email from the school office. Please note that you will need to place a separate order with a new order form for each child you have.

There is a special offer of 3 books for the price of 2 and as if that weren't enough, you can also take off a further £1 as the Fair organisers are happy to redeem your World Book Day vouchers off each purchase.

You just complete the online order form and either email us a copy or send in a print out in to school with your child. The books will then be sent home with your child within a few days.

For those classes that have PE scheduled on World Book Day:

  • Year 5 - PE will be rescheduled to a different day - we will keep you informed
  • Year 2 - please come in wearing your PE kit with your costume in a labelled bag - you can change into your costume after PE
  • Year 4 - please come in wearing your costume, with your PE kit in a labelled bag - you can change into your PE kit before PE

So there you have it - a wonderful array of activities that we hope will get the children excited about the wonderful world of words.

We can't wait to see your World Book Day costumes!
